IMC Calculator

Body Mass Index Calculators can be used to estimate BMI values and corresponding weight status as well as take into account the age of the user. If you need to convert US or metric units, click “Other Units” on the “Metric Units” tab. It should be noted that the BMI calculator also computes the Ponderal Index, both of which are detailed below.

Based on height and weight, IMC determines a person’s leanness or corpulence and quantifies tissue mass. A healthy weight for a person’s height is generally based on this measurement. According to the range between which the BMI value falls, a person is considered underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. It is pertinent to note that both the BMI ranges and the subcategories of overweight and obesity vary by region and age. The presence of overweight or underweight has significant impacts on health. Thus, BMI, while an imperfect indicator of healthy body weight, is a useful tool when deciding whether further testing or action is necessary in a given case. To understand the different categories that are used by the BMI calculator, see the following table.

BMI INTERPRETATION

25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 – 34.9 Moderately Obese
35.0 – 39.9 Severely Obese
40.0 Morbidly Obese

How to Calculate IMC?

  • It is easy to calculate your BMI. You can perform this calculation using a handheld calculator or online through websites or apps containing body mass index calculators.
  • You can calculate the result yourself by simply dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. Alternatively, you can enter your height and weight in an app or website to get your BMI results.
  • If your BMI is above or below the normal range, you must consult with a physician at least once every six months or once a year.
  • It is considered normal to have a BMI between 18.5 and 25 kilograms per square meter. Underweight is classified as 15 or less, underweight is considered 15 to 18, and overweight is classified as 25 to 30. Over 40 is classified as severely obese, while between 30 and 40 are obese.
